Community Chest, Inc. Storey County Community Library

Library Director

Background of Position:
Community Chest, Inc. became stewards of the Storey County Library in 2012 following closure of the library by the county due to funding shortages. After thousands of volunteer hours invested in saving the collection and developing a restoration plan, Community Chest, Inc reopened the library in July 2013 with a small collection of children's books. In September 2013, Community Chest, Inc. received a matching grant from the Community Foundation of Western Nevada to raise funds to hire library staff and support library services. Through support from the community as well as existing and new donors, Community Chest, Inc. doubled the match providing sufficient funds to hire qualified library staff for one year.

Purpose of the Position:
Currently, volunteers staff the library and Community Chest, Inc. manages the volunteers. The purposes for this position include stabilizing the Storey County Community Library and meeting the following goals of the Community Foundation of Western Nevada Partnership Grant: increase awareness, access, and use of Storey County Community Library; increase library capacity to serve more residents and outlying communities; and work toward achieving library status approved by the State of Nevada Libraries and Archives.

Position Qualities
Community Chest, Inc seeks an individual who is willing, motivated, and able to develop a unique delivery of library services in a rural area. The qualities of the position include creatively and exceptionally weaving library services with community outreach to meet the evolving needs of Storey County residents associated with learning, research, literacy, youth programming, information technology, and access to resources. The imperative of the position is to inject resourcefulness into library services in Storey County, funding sustainability, marketing, and community outreach. This is not "your mother's library." It is a vision of libraries in the 21st century—a vibrant, multi-use facility that will attract many people with modern technology.

Requirements for the Position Include:

  • MUST be ambitious, self-starter, self directed, and productive with minimal supervision
  • Master of Library Sciences or equivalent preferred or Library Certification from an accredited college or recognized library program/association accepted, and at minimum two years experience performing duties in a library; or a combination of education and experience
  • Independently carry out an assortment of special and ongoing projects pertaining to stabilizing the library
  • Knowledge of basic library policies, procedures, and record keeping; research methodology; principles and practices of management and supervision; principles of budget administration; how to find information necessary to answer patron reference questions; how to use library resources and equipment; maintenance of library record keeping systems; basics of patron relations and service
  • Ability to effectively administer and develop additional library operations, services, and programs consistent with goals for stabilizing the library
  • Communicate well orally and in writing; basic computer and office equipment skills

Salary
The position is funded for one year following date of hire. Benefits included. Continued employment is dependent on fund development activities in collaboration with Community Chest, Inc

$33,000-$35,000 (DOE) for 30 hours per week

Internship Opportunities at Community Chest, Inc.

Comstock Youth Works

Provide support to high school students who need extra help to succeed. We need a tutor/teacher for summer school coursework, help with career exploration field trips, and good role models. This program has a ten year history of assisting high school students achieve great things academically and personally. The program serves Virginia City High School and Dayton High School.

Counseling Services

We are looking for interns in the following fields for our counseling services: Marriage and Family Therapy, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors. We see children, adults, families and couples. Adrienne Sutherland is a licensed clinical professional counselor and has expertise in the areas of substance abuse counseling and play therapy. Erik Schoen is trained as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Both have experience in clinical supervision.

Classroom on Wheels (COW) Bus

Work as a teacher's aide in a mobile preschool program serving rural Nevada. Our buses go to Mark Twain, Dayton, Stagecoach, and Fernley. Many times this is the only exposure to education and organized social activity these children get prior to starting kindergarten. We currently have three enthusiastic teachers.

Global Voice

Mentor high school youth performing service in another area of our world. The exchange of cultures makes for lifelong memories and learning. Global Voice promotes youth leadership and development through cultural exchange and service-learning--a concept where learning takes place through volunteer service projects that benefit communities at home and abroad. The founders (the Griffin family) created the program in 2003 when they performed a cultural exchange with a group of Northern Ireland youth and youth from Lyon and Storey counties. Community projects were targeted around hunger and homelessness as well as religious divisions and beautification projects at two youth centers. Global Voice has continued this model with yearly trips to locations in Mexico including Ajijic, Teacapan, and Loreto. We have worked with schools, orphanages, and other organizations in practicing the cultural exchange through service model.

Summer Service Trips

We are looking for a female trip leader to assist as a volunteer/intern in leading outdoor adventure service-learning trips for teens this summer. These service adventures involve the following activities: backpacking, gardening, trail-building, rafting, rock climbing, team building, community service, and more. This position is a fantastic way to gain experience for work in the fields of outdoor education, trip guiding, experiential education, and others. We are looking for someone who is in excellent mental/physical condition and who is looking to get hands-on experience in leading an outdoor adventure/community service trip. Candidates with WFA (wilderness first aid), WFR, or higher medical certification are especially encouraged to apply. Trip dates are June 11-19, July 9-17, and August 6-14. Compensation: A $100 stipend will be awarded for the completion of all three trips.

Comstock Kids - Before and After School Program

Supervise elementary age youth while helping them to build academic and social skills. We use a developmental assets approach and view trusting relationships with adults who care as an integral part of growth. This program is in Virginia City at Hugh Gallagher Elementary school from 7:00AM to 9:00AM and 3:30PM to 6:00PM.

Lockwood Youth Mentoring

Mentor a youth in the community of Lockwood just outside of Sparks. Help youth relate to peers and develop trusting relationships. Provide a role model for youth, helping them to develop socially and emotionally.
