Child therapy, first session:
Parent/guardian consultation without child
During the initial parent/guardian consultation, the therapist gains a developmental history on the child through structured questions. A developmental history intake packet is also completed by the parent/guardian.

The therapist learns about why the parent/guardian is seeking therapy for the child and what the parent/guardian hopes to see as a result of therapeutic services. During follow up consultation sessions, the therapist provides feedback on themes occurring in play therapy and gives insight into why themes and behaviors might be occurring.

The therapist gives specific suggestions on how to deal with current behavior concerns and provides reading to solidify the parent/guardian's understanding of the dynamics behind the behavior and/or suggestions.

Child therapy or Play therapy:
Play therapy is used for children since play is their natural and primary method of expression when young. Toys and the sandtray are used as tools for expression. Play therapy assists the child in recognizing, clarifying, and developing insight into their own and others' feelings and behavior.

Through play, a child expresses her/himself more fully and directly than verbally because it is more comfortable. The therapist thoughtfully directs play at times and allows the child to direct their own play at times.

All of the issues traditionally addressed in therapy can be addressed in play therapy such as: anxiety, depression, attachment, relationships, power, violence, nurturing, self-harm, confidence, communication, et cetera.
